El Niño Flooding in Kisumu
Last Sunday, the Nyando River burst its banks, leaving many families in the Kisumu area of Kenya homeless. Lake Victoria is also flooding farms and homes. Many of the poorer families in the area who partner with God’s Green Resourceful Earth, benefiting from trees and agricultural training, have been devastated by losses of human lives, homes, farm animals, and the season’s crops. The Rev. Tom Ochuka has sent pictures and descriptions of the disaster, as you can see above and below. Here is one of the news stories coming out of the area.
Our primary mission is to help forestall such devastations as climate change is wreaking in western Kenya. So far this year we have been very successful in furthering GGRE’s expanding benefits to the area. The flooding is not only forcing postponement of some of our goals but is putting our friends in danger–most immediately from loss of homes and belongings, but over the longer term from loss of food resources from cropland devastation.
Rev. Tom is seeking immediate help to give food and supplies to 100 of the area’s neediest families. Each gift of $100 will help GGRE offer food staples (maize, sugar, salt, cooking oil, flour, and milk) and basic comforts (mattresses, mosquito netting, soap and buckets, blankets, towels, toilet paper) to a devastated family.
